Cozumel is just a little over 6 miles from the mainland, Playa Del Carmen? The island is about 30 miles long and almost 10 miles across. It’s population is hovering around 80,000, most of which live along the western side. Speak to any local or local expat and they will tell you how much the island has changed over the last 20 years.
Although Cozumel is not known for its outstanding surfing, it is perfect for beginners and intermediates. Most experienced surfers who come to Cozumel are looking to enjoy some time in the crystal clear and warm water, and snag a few waves. When asked about swell in Cozumel, Nacho said “Oh, when we have waves, we have waves!” He’s referring to hurricane season or in the winter when the infamous “norte” (north wind) blows through. The norte is bad for diving, snorkeling and fishing, but it makes for a perfect surf day on the east side of Cozumel. If there is a norte, you know where to find Nacho.
The Cozumel Surfing Surf School has been operating for more than 20 years, and has taught thousands – both local and foreign – of people how to surf. Nacho prides himself with not only being the surf ambassador for Cozumel, but also with being the pioneer and entrepreneur who has sustained a surf school despite being in a location that is overwhelmingly dominated by scuba diving. Everybody on the island knows Nacho, or has seen him cruising around the island with large stacks of boards on his truck.
From Nacho’s iconic skull-adorned Explorer to his Caribbean pirate-like surfing antics, this surf school is indisputably original and, furthermore, is not replicable. We guarantee that you will have an outstanding time while learning to surf with Cozumel Surfing, and that your experience will be unlike anything else offered in Cozumel. LET’S GO SURFING!
Nacho’s Surf Career
Nacho, a Cozumel native, has been surfing since he was 13 years old. He has competed in competitions all over the world, including the Canary Islands, Spain and, of course, Mexico, a favorite being in Puerto Escondido.
Drawing upon his insider/local knowledge, Nacho ensures that your surf experience in Cozumel is as radical as it can be! Despite being a relatively small island, there are many different “breaks,” and having surfed all of them for the better part of two decades, Nacho ensures each surf trip is customized to the abilities of a particular group.
While surfing year after year, Nacho has also been a longtime Cozumel lifeguard, and, in turn, he has taught children as young as 5 to respect the ocean and to learn surfing in a safe and easy manner. He and his crew all hold valid marine park cards, as well as CPR and first aid certifications.
